NEWARK Angling Club's freshwater season for 2023 is now coming to a conclusion and members travelled down the Ayrshire coast where 20 competed in the final leg of the 40th Anniversary Quaich on Loch Bradan.

Mark Devlin landed the silverware by returning the heaviest Brown trout of fully a pound  in weight on the club's visit on the Bradan earlier in the season.

This time around the anglers struggled on the Bradan, with the loch at very low level, and there was only seven returns from the day's competition.

Plenty of the loch's undersize trout were caught and returned back to the water on what  was very cold day.

George Martin caught one trout on the maggot which clinched the brown trout champion trophy for the club's senior citizens' title.

Brian Trainner, fishing the fly, also managed one trout for the weigh-in to get on the points board, and fishing the maggot Mark Devlin returned a single fish as well.

There was one return also for Joe O'Brian but he lost a good fish at the net.

Competition winner Barry Doolan covered large areas of the loch, and fishing the spinner certainly paid off when he landed three wild brown trout.

Barry also returned the heaviest trout from the Bradan, a nice 13 ouncer.

The club's brown trout champion will be decided on the last freshwater outing on Loch Ba in two weeks time.

Juniors members struggled on the Bradan could not manage any returns.

Results: 1st, Barry Doolan;  2nd, George Martin; 3rd,  Joe O'Brian; 4th, Mark Devlin.

The club thanks the Malt Men (Jim Davy and Ray) for their sponsorship of the Ayrshire outings.
