ANOTHER exciting season of bowls got underway at Kilmacolm Bowling Club with scores of club members and guests coming along for opening day.

President Norrie Johnstone got proceedings underway with ladies president Violet Simpson throwing the first bowl and jack of the new season.

Following the opening ceremony, members enjoyed the good weather by playing eight ends before heading into the clubhouse for some refreshments.

President Norrie told the Telegraph it had been a fantastic way to kick off the season.

He said: “It was a great day, we had good weather for it.

“It was a mixed open day with both male and female members coming along, and we had a good turnout from kindred clubs.

“It was one of the busiest I think, we had about 60 people sit down after the opening for sandwiches and things like that.

“The weather made it, really.”

The club are keen to encourage more locals to take part in their sport and are planning to hold a number of ‘come and try’ sessions in the near future.

Norrie added: “Bowls is very easy to get into, it’s one of the cheapest sports going.

“It’s only going to cost you the membership really.

“During the winter period we refurbished the whole clubhouse, we moved away from the timber cladding and spent quite a bit of money refurbishing the walls, ceiling and carpeting.

“We’re hoping to start running some quiz nights and race nights, as well as our usual things like bingo and bridge in the post season.”
