GREENOCK WANDERERS got off to the worst possible start to their National Division Four match away to Dunfermline which saw the Fort Matilda men fall to a resounding defeat.
On a glorious afternoon the home side would quickly find themselves on the scoreboard, within the first minute. A kick from Wanderers was charged down and the ball was quickly passed through the hands of the home backs to score.
Wanderers were keen to get themselves a reply, which there were signs off after a good run by Galbraith into the home 22, but they were penalised for holding on in the ruck.
It only took another five minutes for the home side to add to their score with a try after some slick handling at speed by their backs.
Wanderers were holding their own in the forwards, but the backs were finding it very hard to penetrate the home defence. The speed of the home backs was also a factor in Wanderers efforts to get on the scoreboard.
A further pacey move by the home side was stopped by a try-saving tackle by the Wanderers full-back. Wanderers reached half time 26-0 down and with a mountain to climb in the second half, to make any impact on the scoreboard.
It only took three-minutes for the home side to get on the scoresheet again and it was in bizarre circumstances. A loose pass by Wanderers in the home 22 allowed the home side to hack down field, working the ball into midfield. This allowed their winger to canter in under the posts.
A good run by Stone would take Wanderers into the visitors 22 but they were unable to get themselves onto the scoreboard.
The tie would see a further two tries scored by the home side when Wanderers had run out of stamina, ending a very disappointing first match for Wanderers on league duty.
They will have to work hard at training this week to address the situation from their visit at Dunfermline as games do not get any easier with Whitecraigs visiting next Saturday.
Elsewhere the Ladies 1st XV defeated West of Scotland to make it three victories from three games, building on their performance of last week.
The woman’s 2nd XV put in a dominant display against Glasgow University, winning 35-0 in a dominant display.
Sunday brought more success back to Fort Matilda, as the U14’s girls were triumphant in a high scoring affair against Kilmarnock, winning 64-33 whilst the U13’s came up trumps against Bishopton in a pleasing 43-29 victory.
