MORTON striker Robbie Muirhead has made the best start to a season in his senior career and says he is determined to keep it going.

The 27-year-old striker has netted four goals in the first five league fixtures, becoming the first Cappielow star to achieve the feat since club hall of famer Peter Weatherson, below, did it 20 years ago in the 2003-04 campaign.

Greenock Telegraph:

He has notched against Ayr, Raith, pictured, Partick and Dundee United and wants to maintain a consistent scoring rate across each quarter iof the campaign.

Greenock Telegraph:

Muirhead told the Tele: "Somebody told me I’m the first Morton player in 20 years to score in four of the first five games, which is crazy when you hear it.

"On a personal level it’s great to start the season well, it's my best in senior football.

"Long may it continue."

Muirhead's fourth strike of the league campaign came in fortunate circumstances as he latched onto a Declan Gallagher howler to put the ball into an empty net.

He celebrated it gleefully, as angry Dundee United fans vented their rage at their former player.

Muirhead says says tap-ins like that are the goals he savours most.

He said: "I did a podcast with a friend a wee while back and said the same thing to him then, I’ll always over celebrate the tap-ins because of how funny they are to wind people up.

"Noising people up, whether that's fans or opposition players, is part and parcel of playing football.

"It’s all about give and take."

With injuries seeing Ton boss Dougie Imrie having to rely on Muirhead through the middle, he is enjoying shouldering the burden of being the team's main goal threat.

He added: "I’m doing what I was doing last year when I’m playing through the middle, and that’s scoring goals. All strikers are judged on how many goals they score so I'm hoping I can continue to find the back of the net like I have been.

"If I can manage to score four goals in each quarter then I'd finish on 16 league goals this season.

"If that would be how things play out then I’d bite your hand off for that right now."

Muirhead says that coming away from the City of Discovery on Saturday with a positive result was vital to stop the rot of three league defeats on the bounce. But he feels the Greenock men could have snatched all three points after playing against 10 men for the last half an hour.

He said: “We probably could’ve and should have came away with all three.

"But the most important thing was to get some sort of result to get us back on track.

"It was important to get any type of result to stop the rot."
