A GREENOCK-born Gothenburg great who famously achieved European glory with Aberdeen is to be honoured by Inverclyde Council.

John McMaster, who grew up in Gibshill and still lives locally, was part of the Pittodrie side who lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983.

Aberdeen saw off Spanish giants Real Madrid to win 2-1 in the final.

McMaster, 68, also won several league titles and cups under manager Sir Alex Ferguson during his 15 seasons with the Dons.

At a recent council meeting, Provost Drew McKenzie requested that the local authority acknowledge the former footballer on the 40th anniversary of the famous victory.

He asked the council to note McMaster’s ‘service to Greenock Morton Football Club’ and commend his ‘continual promotion of Inverclyde'.

The request was unanimously agreed by councillors.

The Provost said: “John McMaster is a classic case of local boy done good.

“He played for Aberdeen under the auspices of Sir Alex Ferguson and won the European Cup Winners’ Cup forty years ago and those of a certain age will remember that remarkable night in Gothenburg.

“John finished his career at Greenock Morton and was also assistant manager.

“It’s only right that we recognise John’s incredible achievements throughout his career in football and for being an ambassador for Greenock and Inverclyde.”

Consideration will now be given as to the best way for the council to acknowledge McMaster formally.
