MORTON defender Jack Baird has revealed that this weekend’s six pointer against Inverness will involve an unlikely reunion as new Caley boss Duncan Ferguson brings his side to Cappielow.

The Ton stopper was taken aback when he saw the former Rangers and Dundee United striker appointed by the Highlanders last month and told the Tele how the pair’s paths have crossed before.

Baird says the game will provide a full circle moment for him, after being drafted in to help the former Everton legend as he was going through his coaching badges in Largs a number of years ago.

He said: “Duncan Ferguson is one of those guys that’s not just known here in Scotland, it’s world football, so his appointment was good for everyone not just the Championship.

“I don't think it’s an appointment that anyone expected as he’s played, coached and managed at such a high level.

“It’s funny, because when I was at St Mirren under-20s we were asked to go down to Largs and be training players for the guys who were going through their A licence.

“Our youth team was there every other week, for the sessions that the candidates were putting on. Duncan Ferguson was one of them, as was Dougie Freedman, Lee Carsley and a few others.

“I was sitting there a bit awestruck but I always remember him being one of these guys who I loved working with, even if it was only a couple of times in the small sessions he put on.

“He was genuinely one of the nicest people you could meet too."

Baird says that Saturday's game is vital as Ton look to climb off the bottom of the league.

He told the Tele: “It’s going to be a huge game for us, there’s no getting away from it.

“We want to win, especially being at home. You need to make your home games count and we’ve not done that this season."

The towering stopper agrees that both sides have unexpectedly been left licking their wounds after difficult starts to the season.

He said: “Neither team probably pictured their season starting in the way it has, considering how last season finished between ourselves, Inverness and Ayr.

“That’s sometimes how football works though, you put so much into one season that the next one just doesn’t pan out.

“It's not to make excuses but the run of injuries we’ve had has been horrific.

"We’ve missed big players for big periods of time, but hopefully we’re beginning to come to the end of that and we can kick on.”
