FORMER Morton caretaker boss Anton McElhone has taken up a new role at one of the Cappielow side’s Championship rivals - seven months after leaving Premiership Champions Celtic.

The 42-year-old arrived at Cappielow in the summer of 2019 as assistant to David Hopkin before taking the reins as head coach after the former Ton star's dramatic departure in December 2020.

McElhone led the team during a tumultuous period on and off the park as the club navigated the Covid-19 pandemic and battled against relegation.

In his 13-game spell in charge, he won three games, against Dunfermline, Queen of the South and Inverness as well as claiming a notable draw against Hearts at Tynecastle.

He was then replaced by Gus MacPherson in March 2021.

McElhone has now found a new home at Queen’s Park, as their new head of academy following on from his Parkhead exit.

McElhone is understood to now overlook former Cappielow favourite Tam O’Ware who is currently in charge of Young Queen’s Park.

A Queen’s Park statement read: “Recently appointed academy director Tommy McIntyre has wasted no time in bringing in his own replacement with the hugely respected Anton McElhone joining the Spiders as head of academy coaching.

“McElhone started his coaching career over 20 years ago when he had a brief spell in Scotland as an academy coach at Queen’s Park before working with Hibernian, ahead of a stint in England with Tottenham Hotspur and in America with New England Revolution before developing a 'one club' approach to player development and performance throughout the Celtic Academy where he worked very closely with their head of youth and academy Chris McCart.”
