MORTON boss Dougie Imrie says his team have all the incentive they need to down Dunfermline today - as they know a win will take them straight back into the play-off zone.

Ton go searching for their first victory in almost a month when they welcome the Pars to Cappielow this afternoon.

The Ton chief wants the three points that would build a gap between the two sides and also see them leapfrog Airdrie, who are playing in the SPFL Trust Trophy cup final this weekend.

Imrie believes the league will not be settled until the final kick of the ball and wants to put as much distance between his side and the rest of the chasing pack as possible.

He told the Tele: “You can’t win every game in football, that’s impossible even for the top teams. However we do know the position we’re in going into this weekend.

“We know with a win that we can get back into the play-offs, with Airdrie not playing. That’s the aim and that’s the carrot dangling in front of the players, along with hopefully putting some daylight between ourselves and Dunfermline.

“It was the same last season, it was tight knit with everyone fighting for something right up until the last night. I think it’ll be the same again this season, it’ll go right to the wire.

"We want to win as many games as we can because they are running out. We have to try and win today and most importantly we want to put daylight between the two sides. We’ve got a game in hand over Dunfermline and could potentially be sitting clear of them with seven games left. It’s a huge opportunity to go and do that."

Dunfermline are fresh from beating league leaders Dundee United last time but Imrie is not obsessing over that particular result.

He said: “Dundee United are obviously the team to beat, they’re the side that’s got the budget and should be winning the league.

“Any time a team comes up against them, the opposition are extremely motivated to go and get a win. Unfortunately for Dundee United, they need to carry that pressure and need to win every game.

“For us today it’s now about getting back to basics. We were on that great run and now we’re going through a wee sticky patch again, but that’s football."
