MORTON boss Dougie Imrie was full of praise for Welsh forward Jordan Davies ahead of his side's Scottish Cup third round clash against Ayr United.

The former Connah's Quay Nomads front man has impressed off the bench in recent weeks after registering assists against Livingston and then Raith Rovers and the Ton boss admits that he's been knocking on the door for more opportunities in the Cappielow team.

But Imrie admits that Davies is one of just a few selection headaches that he has heading into today's clash at Somerset Park and he says he's been impressed with the commitment shown by the 29-year-old as he looks to make the most of his chance in a Morton top.

He told the Tele: "There's a few headaches to be had in the squad. It's good to see Cammy Ballantyne back in amongst the group, Nathan Shaw has impressed in his couple of 30-minute cameos.

"Jordan has come off the bench in the last few weeks and has showed up really well in getting two assists.

"But they need to do that continuously - they need to be at it. But on the flip side of that then guys like Jordan and other players could be beating the drum in response saying well I need minutes to do that gaffer.

"But to get minutes you need to be doing things week in week out, not just in the odd game.

"But I think that Jordan deserves that opportunity. He's shown up really really well in the last few weeks.

"He's been working hard to try and get more minutes on the pitch and it's testament to him because it's been difficult and he's kept on banging the drum to say right lets get this opportunity and lets make it work. That opportunity will come for him."

When looking back at the first section of the season - Imrie admits his hands have been tied for pretty much all of the campaign.

Injuries and suspensions have impacted on team selections and the Ton gaffer says he'd love to have the opportunity to have been able to pick a consistent team in that time and things might be looking slightly different as the Sinclair Street side head into December.

He continued: "The big thing for me, and I understand the fans frustrations when they hear this.

"My biggest frustration is that I've not been able to have a consistent run of five or six games on the bounce where it's the same eleven.

"In that time they could get to know each other, learn each other's movements to the point you're just playing off the cuff.

"At that point you know where your teammates are going to be, but if you're having to keep on chopping and changing four or five players every second or third game.

"It becomes difficult to get that momentum at that point. But I'm not using that as an excuse as to why we haven't done reasonably well and been higher up the table.

"I certainly think that's because things have gone against us, like big decisions, and I think we should be higher up the league with a higher points total at this point of the season."
