GARY Oliver has told of his relief at finding the net for the first time this season — and the Morton striker hopes to find the net again when Jim Duffy’s men visit Falkirk this
weekend.

The 22-year-old cancelled out Andy Ryan’s opener with a clinical finish to secure a point against Allan Johnston’s Dunfermline at East End Park.

Oliver feels the pressure has been lifted from his shoulders after opening his account for the campaign and will go into Saturday’s clash against the Bairns with confidence after ending his 11-month goal drought.

He told the Tele: “That’s what I’ve been waiting for.

“It’s great to get my first goal of the season because it’s been a long time coming.

“It was a great ball from Michael Doyle, he’s put it across and it’s been a good bit of movement from myself.

“I’ve got a bit of a lucky rebound and I’ve put it beyond the goalie, so I’m delighted to get off the mark.

“I told myself before the game I would score so it’s brilliant.

“It’s something I’ve been chasing for the last number of weeks and it just gives you that bit of confidence as I’ve said plenty of times in the past.

“When the next chance comes you’ll be a bit more relaxed because you’ve scored and the monkey is no longer on your back.”

Despite Oliver’s lack of tally marks in the goal column this term, the striker has been pleased with his other contributions to the Morton outfit.

A deceptively strong player, the No.7 has been instrumental in bringing in team-mates and linking the forward play in recent fixtures.

He said: “I wouldn’t say I’m an out-and-out goalscorer.

“I do like to drop deep and bring others into play and I think that’s my strength.

“But if I can add more goals to my game it will no doubt help the team as well as help my career in general.”

Ton became only the second team of the season to leave East End Park with anything other than a defeat on Tuesday and boss Jim Duffy was full of praise for Oliver and his team-mates for their performances.

The ex-Hearts attacker admits he was delighted to receive the plaudits.

He added: “As a young player praise helps you a lot.

“The gaffer said ‘well done’ for the goal and now to switch concentration to Falkirk on Saturday and try to get another one.”
