MORE trains could be on the way for Inverclyde’s Gourock and Wemyss Bay lines, the Tele can reveal.

Following lobbying by Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil, ScotRail have announced proposals to improve services.

An extra early morning service from Wemyss Bay to Glasgow is on the cards, along with an additional off-peak train between Gourock and Glasgow.

But ScotRail managing director, Steve Montgomery, said final agreement is needed with government agency Transport Scotland before they can press on with the plan.

Labour MSP Mr McNeil today said that pressure must be kept up to keep the extra trains hopes on track.

Mr McNeil said: “ScotRail need to make the case to the Scottish Government for more trains.

“We need to improve our transport links to sustain and grow our population and make it easier for people to travel into Inverclyde and enjoy our attractions like the Beacon and, in the summer, Gourock outdoor swimming pool.” Mr McNeil held a seminar earlier this year to look at public transport issues, covering community transport, ticketing issues and buses and trains for people getting to and from work, education, leisure activities and hospital.

He said: “I’m pleased ScotRail are acting to bring forward more trains, and I hope they get the go-ahead from Transport Scotland.” Transport minister Keith Brown has also been briefed by officials on the plans for extra trains.

He said: “ScotRail are working on plans to enhance the Gourock ‘fast’ service with one additional service between 9am and 4pm from May.

“It is also proposed to provide an additional service from Wemyss Bay to Glasgow Central in the early morning.

“This will be earlier than present to provide an enhanced opportunity for commuters to get to work.”
