A MAN was slashed during an attempted murder attack in Inverkip at 2.30am this morning.

The 34-year-old suffered a serious stomach wound after being assaulted by another man in the street on the A78.

The victim was rushed to Inverclyde Royal and needed surgery.

Detective Mark Gilmour, of Greenock police, said: "A male was assaulted by another male in the street at the A78 in Inverkip. He received an injury to his stomach and has undergone surgery. A weapon was involved. It is being treated as an attempted murder."

A man is 'helping police' with inquiries.
