SYRINGES have been discovered among a mountain of rubbish which has been dumped and set alight by fly-tippers at an Inverclyde beauty spot.

An area of land at the start of the Greenock Cut has been targeted for the second time in as many months with yet more dangerous material found discarded in the picturesque hillside above the town.

Just six weeks ago fly-tippers dumped old kitchen cupboards, units and a toxic asbestos water-tank at the Overton Road site and now yet more hazardous waste has been ditched there, including syringes.

The latest pile of rubbish was also set alight, scorching the landscape.

A dogwalker who regularly uses the site discovered the mess. Today he hit out at those responsible.

The man, who does not want to be named, said: “Scumbags at it again at the same spot as you can see they tried to burn it this time they left syringes and rotten food, a prescription box with a clear name on it.”

A team of Inverclyde Council workers filled up two vans and two lorries full of rubbish last time around to clear the site.

The local authority also sent out another team to clear the latest mess after it was discovered on Wednesday morning.

It is not thought to be commercial waste and is believed to be DIY material.

The Tele understands the council has contacted Scottish Water – which is in charge of reservoirs surrounding the site – to restrict access to the private road, near to the junction with Glen Kinglas and Papermill roads, which leads to the site.

Officials have also slammed the latest act of fly-tipping and urged anyone with information to get in touch or contact the police.

A council spokesman said: “Flytipping is anti-social, selfish and illegal and every time it gets cleaned up costs tax payers money.

“If any readers know who is responsible, we’d urge you to report them immediately.”
