INVERCLYDE Council has been recognised as an official Living Wage employer — with nearly 700 workers benefitting from a pay rise.

They were recently accredited by the Living Wage Foundation and the Poverty Alliance after taking their minimum hourly rate up to £8.25.

Council leader Stephen McCabe is now hoping that other employers in Inverclyde follow their lead.

Accepting the Living Wage Accreditation, council leader Stephen McCabe said: “As the largest employer in our area, I hope this accreditation also sends a message to public and private sector employers across Inverclyde to join with us and supporting the living wage.

“Inverclyde was one of the first councils in the country to pay the living wage and it is right that we follow that commitment through by becoming an accredited living wage employer.”

Inverclyde Council employees are now paid a living wage set independently and based on  ‘minimum income standard’.

The national living wage, set by the UK Government, is set to be increased from £6.70 to £7.20 for over 25s in April.
