TALENTED twins are celebrating double success in a national Burns contest.

Notre Dame High pupil John Morrison was first in the S1/2 National Burns Verse Speaking Competition.

His sister Amy also took part and was highly commended.

John, 13, said: “I recited An Address to a Haggis and I wasn’t expecting it to win.

“I’ve finished third before but I’ve never won.

“I just love the words and like reading the poetry.

“Robert Burns is an interesting character.”

The pair, who attended elocution teacher Etta Gavin’s classes, took on super speakers from all over Scotland at St George’s Girls School in Edinburgh.

Amy was recognised for her Address to the Toothache, while John received and a certificate and a quaich.

The brother and sister act live in Partridge Road with their mum Maria and big brother Aidan, 20. They also have an older sister, Hollie, who is 24.

They caught the Burns bug from their siblings who also took part in competitions.

Depute head Michelle Liddell said: “The school is delighted with John and Amy’s achievements.

“They are involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities.

“They are very much a credit to their family and school.

“We have Burns as a unit of study in second year and we have a Burns competition in the school as well.

“Both John and Amy have taken part in Burns Suppers and school shows and they are into sports too.

“They are very good all rounders and everyone here at the school is proud of them and their achievements.”
