AN exercise club is in pole position to host the first dance showcase of its kind in Inverclyde.

Scarlet Fever Pole Fitness in Greenock will welcome dancers from all over the country to their base at Dazzles Dance studio on Saturday June 18 for a special competition — with a twist.

Pole Champs is the first pole dancing event of its kind to be staged in the area and deviates from a typical competition where competitors are put under the spotlight by judges.

Instead, the organisers say it will be a relaxed environment for dancers to showcase their technique and routines, and enjoy a laugh along the way.

People are expected from as far afield as Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Fife for the event in Greenock.

Pole dancing has become commonly accepted as an excellent way for women to keep fit while having fun.

The local club has also had positive outcomes with helping people struggling with issues such as anxiety.

Instructor Joy Finnegan, from Greenock, is excited about the competition in her hometown next month.

She told the Tele: “Scarlet Fever will be doing a big opening act with instructors doing solo routines as well.

“Pole fitness is about strength, endurance and stamina. You work up a sweat doing it whilst having fun and a laugh as well.

“It’s not sexual in any way. People come here for a workout.

“You can do exotic but this is about fitness.”

While the two versions of dancing on offer are poles apart, participants say it is a great way to boost self-confidence.

Dancer Carly Luke, also from Greenock, said: “I have no experience of dance whatsoever. Me and my friend Stacey started this when we were 19 and we love it.

“The amount of confidence people leave here with is amazing and it’s for people of all ages.”

Attention has turned to the event on June 18 and the club is hoping for a big turnout.

Carly said: “It’s more of a friendly environment for pole dancers to show their routines and what they can do.

“Pole Champs is a showcase for people from all over the country to come and take part. There’s no judges, no scrutiny.

“It’s about having fun, showing what you can do and what you have been working on.

“Everyone has different styles and it’s great to see everyone together.”

Tickets for the event are now on sale from The Albany by calling 866100, online at www.thealbany.info or from the Scarlett Fever Pole Fitness Facebook page, where there is also more information about the club.
