AN MSP has backed a report which says longer trains from Gourock would reduce congestion during peak times in the morning.

The findings were announced as part of a study by Network Rail looking at how to improve travel over the next 10 years and beyond.

Greenock & Inverclyde MSP Stuart McMillan took part in the consultation process and is pleased that his views have been taken on board.

The SNP’s Mr McMillan said: “Following my submission to the recent Network Rail, Scotland Study Route Consultation I congratulate the finding that lengthening trains from Gourock would reduce congestion on the valuable service to Glasgow Central in the morning peak hour travel.

“Rail travel has grown significantly over the past two decades, especially as more and more people from Inverclyde choose to travel by train to Glasgow and beyond for work and travel.

“In my submission to the consultation, I highlighted that trains from Inverclyde to Glasgow should be increased in both length and frequency of services available.

“With the proposed (housing) expansion of the former Inverkip Power Station, there will most definitely be an increased demand for train journeys at peak times.

“I am particularly pleased that the report has found the Inverclyde train travel corridor demand significantly exceeds the overall estimated national growth of the network and the addition of extra seating is required to service this traffic.

“Increasing the frequency and length of the trains it will certainly aid environmental concerns and will assist with future demand.”
