POLICE and fire investigators are today probing a string of suspicious blazes in Greenock’s Bow Farm area — including the torching of a community centre.

Youths were seen setting fire to wheelie bins in Davey Street at around 7.40pm last night, just 20 minutes before reports of a roof being ablaze at the centre off Bow Road.

Police were still at the scene this morning and Detective Inspector David Wagstaff of Greenock CID has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He told the Telegraph: “Anyone who witnessed people on the roof of the community centre should contact us immediately.”

A team of six firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the fire within the roof space of the community centre during an operation lasting nearly four hours.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said today: “We received the call at 8.01pm. Two hose reel jets were used, as well as six breathing apparatus kits.

“Crews were stood down at 11.55pm.”

DI Wagstaff said: “We know that youths were seen setting wheelie bins alight in Davey Street at 7.38pm and then a very short time later there is a fire at the community centre.

“A joint police and fire investigation is now under way to establish the cause and full circumstances of the incidents.

“We would urge anyone who saw any suspicious activity, or people within the area at around the time of the fires to contact us.”

If you can help with the investigation, contact the police on the 101 number or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
