A TEENAGER was rushed to hospital last night after he was attacked in Greenock.

The 17-year-old boy was walking in Carwood Street near to Ratho Street around 8.30pm when he was assaulted.

The youth was rushed to Inverclyde Royal Hospital and is to undergo surgery for a hand injury.

Detective Constable Stuart Young of Greenock CID said the incident is being treated as a serious assault and is appealing for witnesses.

He said: "The 17-year-old male was allegedly assaulted by an unknown male who appears to have used a weapon and caused a hand injury to the male.

"The suspect is believed to have been wearing dark clothing.

"Any pedestrians or motorists who were in the area who may have seen anything, or may have spotted a male running in the direction of Bawhirley Road, is asked to come forward."
