CRUISE passenger numbers at Greenock next year will be UP on the figure for 2016 – as some of the biggest operators in the world set sail for Greenock again.

The booming Ocean Terminal will be at near capacity, with 103,000 passengers coming in on 59 ships during another busy year.

Regular visitors like the Caribbean Princess, pictured, will return along with Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth during the summer.

Director Andrew Hemphill also told the Tele that Disney – who are returning for a second year – are in talks to increase their visits to Greenock.

Mr Hemphill said: “It is another really successful year. We are delighted to confirm the return of Disney Magic.

“They are looking at making more visits in 2018.

“It is possible that we could yet add to the number of ships during year.

“But we are certainly reaching capacity and are still looking at a berth extension to meet demand.”

Two of the highlights will be the arrival of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth on July 9 followed by Disney Magic on July 15.

MSC Preziosa, operated by MSC Cruises, will bring in the most passengers in a single visit, with 4,345 on board in her first stop off in May before a return in July.

Caribbean Princess will make a total of 12 calls at the terminal, while Hebridean Princess will be here nine times.

Staff face a busy day on June 2, when Mein Schiff 4 and Le Boreal both dock.

On July 18 Adona and Columbus arrive on the same day and another double header takes place on July 26 when Azamara Journey and Aegean Odyssey visit. The popular Saga cruises will also be calling at the terminal throughout the season, with passengers boarding.

The Tele reported earlier this month how port bosses are already taking bookings for 2018 as operators snap up slots.
