A PROUD Port Glasgow couple as still as good as gold — 50 years on from when they got married.

Peter and Veronica Miller, both 71, celebrated their milestone wedding anniversary on Saturday.

They married in St Martin’s Church in Mansion Avenue on March 18, 1967 and then went to Aberdeen for their honeymoon.

But Peter says he nearly missed his chance with Veronica.
He told the Tele: “We met at the dancing.

“I’d never been to Burtons before but was coaxed to go.

“I didn’t know it was the last dance until it was too late, so I didn’t get a dance with her.

“Thankfully she said ‘see you next week’ and it went from there.”

Peter is a joiner by trade and used his skills to make a special box for the couple’s wedding album.

He originally worked in the shipyards with the Caledonian Joinery Company and moved on to the SECC in Glasgow as a project manager before working for Plan-IT in Hillington until his retirement.

Veronica was a former employee at the Gourock Ropeworks in the Port.

The pair are from the town and have lived there all their lives.

Peter is also a former president of Port Glasgow and Greenock & District bowling clubs.

They have one grown up son, Peter, who is 43, and grandson Toby, 11, and live at home in Lilybank with beloved dog Meg, who they rehomed six years ago after a Tele appeal.

Peter revealed one of their secrets to a long and happy marriage — and says it backs up the old saying that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

He said: “She was the cook and a good cook.

“We’ve stuck by each other all our days and helped each other.

“We’re the same now as when we met.

“We’ve never went anywhere without each other.”
