A CONVOY of police cars and vans swooped on a busy street during a major alert in Gourock this afternoon.
Two vans and three cars rushed to Shore Street around 3.30pm and officers were seen checking various closes appearing to search for someone.
The Telegraph was told at the scene by one onlooker that the major alert had been sparked by reports that a man had run into a tenement close wielding a cleaver.
Several officers were seen checking one particular close.
Shopkeepers and residents came out onto the street after seeing the police arrive.
A police spokeswoman said officers were called out over 'concern for a person' and did not provide any further information.
