DANGEROUS overgrown shrubbery on a busy Greenock main road is to be removed.

The raised shrub area on the A78 at the Inverkip Road/Dunlop Street junction was so overgrown that it blocked visibility for pedestrians trying to cross the road.

Councillor Tommy McVey got on the case and now trunk road maintenance bosses Scotland TranServ have agreed to act.

Cllr McVey told the Tele: “I received a complaint from a constituent about the shrubbery.

“If someone was trying to cross the road, they couldn’t see cars coming off the roundabout — it caused a blind spot.

“It was a real safety concern.

“But nobody would take responsibility for it.”

Councillor McVey initially contacted Transport Scotland to sort out the issue.

He added: “I emailed Transport Scotland and received a response back saying that the area wasn’t on their books but that Scotland TranServ will take it on.

“It’s good news for road safety.

“I’m happy with that because the safety of pedestrians is paramount.”

Neil Lang, the area manager at Transport Scotland, told Cllr McVey that the shrub bed was not on the trunk road inventory.

His reply added: “As all other shrub/flower beds on the trunk road network within Greenock are maintained by Inverclyde Council, it was assumed that they also undertook the maintenance of this one but this appears not to be the case.

“We are currently adding this area to the trunk road inventory whereby Scotland TranServ will be given responsibility to maintain it going forward and overgrown foliage will be cut back as soon as possible.”
