LITTLE Thomas Williams is one of the first newborns in Inverclyde to be welcomed to the world with a baby box.

The tiny tot will benefit from the roll out of the Scottish Government’s flagship policy to give every baby the same start in life.

Mum-of-three Gemma was thrilled when the large box arrived on her doorstep jam-packed with essentials for both her and her newborn son.

Tiny Thomas was due to be born on August 19 but arrived three weeks early.

Mum Gemma, from Lomond Road in Wemyss Bay, said: “I couldn’t believe the size of the box when it arrived. It felt like Christmas when I was going through the box.

“It has absolutely everything you would need for the first six months — babygrows, blankets, play mats, books. It is incredible.

“They also sent a little poem with it which is lovely.”

Parents Gemma, 29, and husband Robert, 31, were delighted at the safe arrival of their baby boy Thomas, to join daughters Freya, who’s six, and Naomi, four.

One of the ideas behind the box, similar to a scheme in Finland, is to give babies somewhere safe to sleep.

Busy Gemma, said: “It is ideal for putting your baby to sleep down the stairs during the day if you only have one Moses basket.

“All of the items in the box will come in useful.

“My girls are having a great time colouring in the box as well.”

Baby Thomas was supposed to be born on August 19 but arrived on July 31 weighing a healthy seven pounds.

His early arrival meant that he could go along with his sister Naomi when she started school last week, joining big sister Freya at Wemyss Bay Primary.

Gemma added: “We were all there together when Naomi started school which was lovely.

“I was five weeks early with Naomi so I was prepared for him to come early. I had him at the RAH and he’s such a great wee baby. He is a wee doll and his sisters love him to bits.”

The baby boxes, which are worth around £160, were rolled out in Inverclyde from August 15.

New parents benefit from items including a changing mat, digital thermometer, a fleece jacket and a hooded bath towel.

There are also cot sheets, a mattress and a blanket.

Gemma added: “I think it is a wonderful idea so that all babies get the same start in life.”
