MSP Jamie Greene has saluted the men and women of the Merchant Navy.

Mr Greene attended a celebration in his home town of Greenock to mark Merchant Navy Day last week.

The event run by maritime welfare charity Seafarers UK aims to raise awareness of the role of men and women who work at sea.

Mr Greene said: “It was a real privilege to have a cup of tea with some of the men and women who work tirelessly to ensure that the UK continues its great maritime trade — as we are an island these seafarers are vital to the continuing strength of our economy.

“After Brexit is concluded the UK will be expanding its maritime trading to new partners across the world so ports like ours in Inverclyde will become even more necessary.

“That’s why we need to support these seafarers in their efforts to sell Scottish and British goods to all corners of the world. I want to maximise the potential of our local port so that we can bring jobs, wealth and investment into Greenock and Inverclyde.”
