TRIBUTES have today been paid to a late former Special Olympic star and long-serving member of a groundbreaking social club.

Moira Irvine, who had learning disabilities and had been attending Inverclyde Enable Club for more than 30 years, has passed away at the age of 58.

Social convener Lisa Watson says her friend was the life and soul of the party and will be sorely missed.

She said: “Moira was a member for more than 30 years and was one of the longest-serving members.

“She was always happy at the club and never missed a night, even if it was snowing.

“That was her thing on a Monday and Thursday night.

“Sadly she’s not the only member who has passed away lately and you do feel it.”

Lisa said Moira passed away suddenly, shortly after being admitted to hospital.

She said: “She had a wee fall and was taken in and was diagnosed with cancer.

“It happened all of a sudden.”

Moira is survived by her sister Agnes and brothers Robert and Andrew.

Lisa says Moira was originally from the Strone, then moved to Ann Street and latterly lived in nearby Mearns Street.

She said: “She bowled in the Special Olympics and I’m sure she won quite a few medals.”

Moira was a familiar figure known around the town and very independent.

She said: “She was well known in the town. Everyone knew her from taxi drivers to shop assistants.

“She was out and about a lot and was quite independent until a year or so ago when she started using a zimmer frame.”

The Enable Club meets in Greenock Town Hall on Mondays and Thursdays and is open to people aged 18 and above.

Lisa said: “It’s a way for people who have learning or physical disabilities to have their social time-out and for parents and carers, it’s two hours of respite for them, knowing their loved ones are in a safe environment.”

The group is self-funded and depends on donations and fundraising and is currently on the lookout for more volunteers. Their next charity night is being held on October 21 in Greenock’s Grosvenor Bowling Club at 7pm.

Tickets cost £7 and can be purchased from helpers.
