WESTERN Ferries’ large infrastructure investment at McInroy’s Point is almost complete after a new linkspan was put in position.

The structure was transported down the Clyde from the Ferguson Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow, where it was fabricated.

The linkspan is part of an overall £6m investment in major quayside upgrades, with similar work being carried out across the water at Hunters Quay.

Crane barge vessel Lara picked up the 30-metre structure from Ferguson’s, took it downriver and lifted it into place at the ferry berthing facility at Gourock.

The linkspan will enable the firm to cope with tidal variations and changeable weather and its introduction is aimed at enhancing reliability and resilience of the service.

Western managing director Gordon Ross said: “The benefits of having two operational linkspans at both sides means operational resistance, robustness and flexibility to deal with foreseen and unforeseen events, such as weather conditions and maintenance.”

The ferry operator recently posted a profit before tax of £2.5 million for the year, down from £2.6million last year.
Mr Ross says Western’s performance has helped the firm to invest in on-shore facilities.

He said: “The accounts to March 2017 represent another positive performance for Western Ferries and off the back of these results, it has given us the confidence to invest in our shoreside infrastructure.

“With one-third of the investment programme nearing completion, it is estimated that our entire investment will be in the region of £6m.

“These investments will both continue and safeguard the two berthing options at each end of our service and therein the operational resilience, flexibility and robustness our customers have come to rely on.”
