PRIMARY school children from across the area showed their competitive side as they enjoyed an action-packed sportshall athletics contest.

A total of 20 schools took part, with around 200 primary five to seven pupils competing every day in a series of heats.

The contest took place at Lady Octavia Sports Centre in Greenock, with the event arranged in partnership with the Inverclyde Active Schools Team, and the Tele went along to capture the action.

Stewart Burns, manager of the centre, says the annual event is popular with pupils who get the chance to try out new activities.

He said: “The event is always well attended and has always been a great success.

“It’s great for the kids — it introduces them to competitive sports.”

Stewart added: “It introduces them to sports they might not do in school.”

The competition includes a variety of events, from javelin and triple jump to relay races.

The regional final takes place on February 7, with the winners going through to the West of Scotland stage.
