A MAN who suspected his ex-partner of cheating brandished two knives and threatened to murder her during a terrifying late night rant.

Scott Crossan told the woman that he would stab her to death in her Greenock home.

The town’s sheriff court how Crossan, 32, began shouting and swearing at his victim as she lay in bed at around 1.30am, before escalating his abusive behaviour.

Prosecutor John Penman said: “He produced two kitchen knives and threatened to murder her.”

The fiscal depute had earlier told the court: “They had been in an on-off relationship for six years.

“He accused her of cheating and demanded her mobile phone, which she refused.

“The accused went into the living room and threw his own mobile phone against a wall.”

Mr Penman added: “The complainer went to contact another witness and he threatened to stab her.”

The court heard how Crossan’s victim managed to make her call before he grabbed her mobile phone and refused to give it back.

It was then that he took hold of the knives and brandished them at the woman and issued his chilling death threat.

He later smashed her phone against a wall after her friend arrived but remained within the flat and police later detained him in the kitchen.

Crossan’s lawyer said: “The incident came out of what was initially a domestic argument and Mr Crossan is of the view that the argument was not wholly one-sided.

“Mr Crossan is extremely remorseful and the relationship is now over.”

The solicitor pleaded for his client to be spared prison and allowed to return to his family.

But Sheriff Linda Smith decided that there was no alternative to prison for Crossan.

The sheriff told him: “You have an horrendous record involving knives.”

Crossan, whose address was not given in court, committed the offence at an address on Broomhill Way on January 25.
He was sentenced to 204 days.
