IT'S 'no Spain no gain' for a super swimmer from Greenock who has been selected to fly the flag for Scotland at the Cerebral Palsy World Games in Barcelona.

Isaac Dunning, from Patrick Street, says he can't wait to take the plunge at the prestigious competition in August.

The 21-year-old, who trains six times a week with the Port Glasgow Otters, says his selection means a lot to him.

Isaac told the Tele: "To be selected is a big achievement in itself.

"I have been doing a lot of work in the pool to get faster so it's nice to be chosen to represent Scotland.

"I have cerebral palsy which affects my walking but in general it doesn't hold me back.

"I don't see myself as being disabled - I see myself as being able."

Isaac, who is at college studying for an HNC in childcare and who is also a swimming coach with Inverclyde Leisure, competed in the event when it was held in Nottingham back in 2015.

He added: "It was a great experience.

"I stayed in the village with the other athletes, it was brilliant."

Andrew Hemphill, one of the coaches at the Port Otters, says Isaac has worked hard to get to where he is today.

He said: "It's a great achievement for Isaac as only four swimmers from Scotland have been chosen to compete.

"When Isaac swam in Nottingham he won three gold medals and two silver, so we are trying to replicate that and go beyond that."

Andrew says Isaac is a role model for other young people across Inverclyde.

He said: "He has shown that he can study at college and have a job but still swims at a high level."

Isaac's mum Yvonne, 49, is very proud of her son.

She said: "He's really worked hard.

"He had a bad injury about six years ago where he fell on a stone floor, which was worrying as we never knew if he would walk again.

"He couldn't for about eight months and was out of training for about a year.

"But he walked again and eventually got back to training - he's so dedicated."

His mum was keen to thank the Peter Stanton Memorial Trust for funding Isaac's trip to Barcelona.

The club are now looking for funding so that Andrew can accompany Isaac to the event.
