THE Cappielow pitch was a very crowded place as Morton’s top team took on over 100 youngsters from the club’s community trust.

The Morton in the Community boys were given a dream opportunity to face their heroes on Monday in a 120 versus 11 exhibition match.

It was part of the Ton trust’s fifth birthday celebrations, which also included a family fun day at a recent match and a charity ball in Greenock Town Hall.

The youngsters from the 2004-2011 teams were bossed by Blair Kelly, and they came out on top in a seven-goal thriller on a sunny day at Cappielow, swarming all over Jim Duffy’s stars.

Their five goalkeepers were able to keep the senior side down to two goals – scored by Michael Doyle and Thomas O’Ware – whilst netting five at the other end.

The Ton players tried every trick in the book to level the playing field and Gary Harkins was given his marching orders by referee Chic Kavanagh for lifting an opponent off the ground to steal possession.

After the final whistle had sounded, Brian McLaughlin, Morton in the Community development manager, said: “The community boys were a real credit to themselves and the coaches and parents who took in the game from the Cowshed.”

Brian joked: “It was clear to see the players had really worked on the 30-45-45 formation and the five goalkeepers kept the Morton first-team squad at bay with a string of excellent saves.

“We would like to thank everyone at Greenock Morton for allowing this game to take place and provide our community players memories that will certainly last a lifetime.”
