SCHOOL pupils are in the driving seat at football-themed educational course thanks to Greenock bus firm McGill's.

The Larkfield-based operator laid on coaches to transfer P5s from St Andrew's and Newark primaries to and from Cappielow to take part in the Morton in the Community Literacy Trail.

The club's charitable trust uses football and the Ton to help local school children with their learning and McGill's - Scotland's largest independent bus firm - stepped in to make sure they got to the courses safely.

Children also received goody bags from the company during their last day at Cappielow.

Rachel Stewart, marketing assistant at McGill's, said: "We were more than happy to get involved in this project as it allows children a fantastic way to learn new things, as well as providing an unforgettable experience for them.

"As a local company, we recognise a large amount of residents depend on our services every day and we are keen to support the community where possible, even if it's gestures like providing transport for schools."

The literacy trail, delivered in partnership with Inverclyde Council's Attainment Challenge team, aims to improve talking and listening skills among the area's young people.

Cappielow's boardroom becomes a temporary classroom where pupils take part in interview analysis, mock press conferences and match commentary workshops.

Gordon McKillop of Morton in the Community, said: "Teachers tell us we are engaging children in literacy who wouldn't otherwise without the unique learning experience of Cappielow, Greenock Morton and football on the whole.

"Not only is this support from McGill's giving the project more sustainability but gives participating children a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

"McGill's has become a key project partner to the Greenock Morton Literacy Trail and we look forward to our work together for years to come."
