A GOUROCK schoolgirl is on the crest of a wave after receiving a top award.

Heather Wilson, a pupil at St Columba's High, has been named as top sea cadet in the Clyde South area.

The hard-working 15-year-old, who attends the Greenock & District Sea Cadet Corps, says it's a huge honour.

She told the Tele: "It's one of the top ranks and it means a lot to be recognised in this way."

Heather, who lives with her parents Kay and Alan in Rosemount Place, says the local sea cadets unit has changed her life.

She said: "I started about five years ago and love everything about it, but mainly being with my pals.

"I met a new best friend through cadets.

"I also enjoy doing competitions in things like kayaking and sailing and gaining new qualifications."

Heather says the cadets has also improved her confidence.

She said: "Joining the cadets is one of the best things I've ever done.

"The smallest, shyest person will join the sea cadets and be guaranteed to become 10 times more confident.

"It's great for your confidence."

Heather, who has her sights set on joining the Navy, is encouraging more young people across Inverclyde to sign up for the sea cadets.

She added: "Hopefully people will come along and see for themselves.

"It's something which is great to try out especially as you get to enjoy lots of trips away."

Heather was keen to thank her parents for their support as well as Jim Hearl, the unit's commanding officer.

Jim says he is very proud of Heather.

He said: "Heather joined when she was just 10 and she has matured into a very intelligent and productive young lady.

"She has managed to achieve all her goals and she is currently working on her Duke of Edinburgh silver award.

"She also likes to compete and at the weekend she was part of a team who won the district rowing competition, which takes her onto the area event."

Anyone who is interested in joining the Greenock & District Sea Cadet Corps can phone Jim on 07811 971114 or check out their Facebook page.

Parents and kids can also pop along to see the group which meets at their summer headquarters at the Great Harbour in James Watt Dock every Monday and Friday at 6.30pm.
