AUDIENCES will be taken on a time-warp back to the 80s as Gourock school pupils stage their hilarious end of year school show.

Last minute rehearsals are under way at St Columba's High as the talented young people put the finishing touches to their American style musical which opens tomorrow.

Graham Currie, a modern studies teacher at the school who is also the show's director, says the crowds are in for a real treat over the three-night run.

He said: "The show is set in the 1980s, in an American high school.

"It's a parody of classic 80s movies such as 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', the 'Breakfast Club' and 'Heathers'.

"The story features Corey who is looking back to his school days in the 1980s.

"It has all your stereotypical American high school characters such as the geeks, the 'jocks' and the cheerleading team.

"It's a very funny musical."

The cast, who range from S1 to S6, have been rehearsing since February.

Rachel Robertson, who has just finished S6, says it will be an emotional end to her time at high school as she has appeared in every school show.

The 18-year-old said: ""I have been so used to looking forward to the school show every year.

"But I'm hoping to keep up with music and drama outwith school."

Rachel takes one of the starring roles in the production.

She added: "I play Mrs Brannigan, a teacher who features in a bit of a plot twist.

"She is portrayed as being very friendly and approachable but she has a bit of a past."

Darren Boyd, who has also finished S6, says it's great to play Corey Junior in the show as he relates to the character.

He said: "It's quite a hefty role but it's fun because I get to tap into all the different sides of acting.

"Corey junior is not cool but not uncool so it's easier to play him as that was what I was like at school."

The school are keen to thank all the staff and pupils who have helped out with the show especially Claire Rogers, an art and design teacher who carried out all the promotional work, and Monica Durning, principal teacher of art and design, who worked with the pupils to create the backdrop.

Other staff who have been involved include Jonathan Michael, the principal teacher of music, and John Roy Garrod, one of the teachers in the department.

Special thanks also go to Elaine McArthur, the ICT teacher, and pupils Finn and Maya Donnachie, who helped to design the set.

Tickets for the musical, which starts at 7.30pm each night, cost £7 and can be booked by phoning 715250.
