FLOWER power lit up this year's Gourock Garden Party.

The colourful annual event at the walled gardens on Sunday afternoon was a big success as the community came together to enjoy entertainment, food and a superb selection of stalls.

One of the highlights of the day was when the gala queen Emma Johnstone presented St John's Church in Gourock with the Elspeth Riddell Community Award in recognition for all the work it has done in the community over the past 175 years.

Former Gourock councillor Jim Hunter meanwhile presented the Unsung Hero Betty Mather MBE trophy to joint winners - Ursala McLean, for her contribution to the local community, including the Gourock Pensioners Club, and Gourock dentist Josephine Weir, a lifelong supporter of the event who goes 'above and beyond' to help local people.

George Irvine, chairman of Gourock Horticultural Society, which organised the event in partnership with Gourock Community Council, said: "It was an excellent family day out.

"There was something for everyone.

"This year's theme was flower power and that seemed to go really well.

"The children's parade was great, some of the costumes were very impressive.

"One wee girl, who was under five, dressed as a flower girl and it was absolutely brilliant.

"We also had Bill and Ben The Flower Pot Men and a kid dressed up as a weed - it was fantastic."

Spectators were spoiled with a packed programme of live entertainment while tasty treats were served up at the barbecue.

George added: "The Clydeside Singers were there and they were excellent, as were the Riverside Youth Band.

"We also had dancers from Dance Mania and refreshments were available in the tea room."

One of the most popular attractions was a demonstration from Inverclyde Wood Turning Club.

George added: "A lot of people stopped to watch them, that was a new attraction for this year."

Lots of goodies were on offer at the various stalls.

George said: "We had the RNLI, Friends of Ardgowan Hospice, Old Gourock and Ashton Church and Wellington Children's Centre.

"We had a few new stalls this year."

Money raised from the entry donations at the gate will be presented to local charities.
