KILMACOLM Primary pupils have vowed to keep up their passion for reading after winning a national award.

The 'live reading' campaign left judges at the Scottish Education Awards spellbound.

The school's bid to encourage a new generation of bookworms has attracted fans in high places with TV presenter Lorraine Kelly and top authors getting right behind them.

Two of the young readers, primary six pupils Sam McGoldrick and Emma Boyd, were at the ceremony for the big surprise, along with head teacher Simone McCreadie and primary four teacher Ailie Glover who has helped drive the project.

Emma said: "We were so excited when our names were called out."

Classmate Sam added: "I didn't even like reading before, now I love it and I read all the time."

Head Ms McCredie says the project was driven by a desire to work with parents to get kids to switch off their tablet devices.

Delighted Simone said: "We have taken the children on an amazing adventure together.

"It all started by listening to parents who said that they wanted their children off of tablets.

"The secret of the our success is to keep it new, we come up with something different every year.

"We wanted to make reading fun and now have kids who love reading who would never have read a book before.

"It is part of everything we do."

Kilmacolm Primary was joined at the education awards by King's Oak, who as the Tele recently reported were successful in winning an award for their family and community learning achievements.
