TWO aspiring DJs are in a spin after being announced as the opening acts for chart-topper Example in Greenock.

Greenock West College Scotland music students John Gibb and Dale O'Neill, both 22, are pinching themselves after being handed a support slot for the huge town hall gig on Thursday in aid of Ardgowan Hospice.

The pair have just completed a course at the Finnart Street campus and were hand-picked for the show by Greenock actor and event organiser Martin Compston on the recommendation of their lecturer and mentor, DJ Bunty.

John performs under the name Perm - a nod to his previous hairstyle - while Dale is better known as DWI, an abbreviation of his favourite saying, 'deal with it'.

The gig, which will also feature a set from George Bowie and his legendary GB Experience, will be their first major performance and they are thrilled at the prospect.

John said: "I'm chuffed to bits.

"Example is a big name and someone I listened to growing up.

"It's thanks to Bunty for putting us forward for it - the course has helped a lot.

"I'm nervous and excited about it but my debut is on Monday in The Buff Club in Glasgow so I should be a bit more relaxed after that."

The pair will play a set each to warm up the crowd for Example and will also take to the decks in Word Up at the after-party.

Dale said: "I was overwhelmed when I got asked.

"I'm a bit nervous because it's the biggest gig for me so far.

"I played at a small show in Paisley a few months ago but it's nothing compared to this."

The gig is the fourth charity event organised by Line of Duty actor Martin, who is a patron of the hospice.

He has brought the likes of comedian Frankie Boyle and Dundee rockers The View to Greenock in recent years, helping to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the charity.

Martin told the Tele: "In keeping with our previous comedy and band events, it's great we have this platform for young and local to people to showcase their talent alongside some phenomenal established acts.

"Both John and Dale have came highly recommended and we're delighted to have them onboard.

"With the lads also playing the Word Up after-show, the party will continue long into the night."

Tickets for the Example gig, which is now extended to over-14s, are available online from www.brownpapertickets.com

A limited number are also on sale, excluding booking fee, at Fenwick 47 on West Blackhall Street.

Over-18s with a valid ticket will gain entry to the Word Up after-party for free.
