YOUNG people made waves at their high octane water show in Greenock.

The Esplanade came alive with power boats and jet skis as the children from the Greenock & District Sea Cadets Corps showed off their maritime magic.

Jim Hearl, the group's commanding officer, said it was great to see the young cadets 'sea's' the day and show other youngsters what they're missing out on.

He said: "This was a chance to put ourselves on show for the public to attract some new blood into the organisation.

"Kids sit in their houses on Playstations and complain about having nothing to do.

"But in our organisation there's always something to do - whether that's boating, archery, or shooting.

"I think we're Inverclyde's best kept secret."

The cadets, who complete training and earn qualifications before taking to the water, showed off their skills on the Clyde.

Jim added: "When people go on holiday it can cost a fortune to hire a jet ski so this way the children get to try it out without the price tag.

"The children are all trained up, they don't get in a boat until they pass a proficiency test.

"They undergo the Personal Watercraft Proficiency course which is a Royal Yachting Association qualification.

"For kayaking there is British Canoe and Scottish Canoe Association qualifications and for rowing there is a British Rowing qualification.

"They are all internally run qualifications."

The sea cadets are keen to welcome new members.

Two sessions run, one for 10 to 12-year-olds and another for 12 to 18-year-olds.

The groups meet every evening from Monday to Friday at the Great Harbour/James Watt Dock at 6.30pm.
