A SPECIAL lady has celebrated the magical milestone of her 100th birthday.

Mary Pawson, who lives in Marchmont House Care Home in Port Glasgow, marked the day with a visit from her daughter and grandsons.

She moved into Marchmont House three months ago and has settled in to her new surroundings.

Grandson Fraser Scott, 45, said: "We had a family get together and she enjoyed reading all her cards and letters with best wishes from all her old friends more so even than her Telegram from the Queen."

Mary originally hails from Kilmarnock and was happily married to the late George who ran a family business, for 70 years.

She stayed at home to bring up their only child Irene and enjoyed cooking, baking and knitting.

She also has another two grandsons Cameron, 50, and Kevin, 52.

Fraser said: "For my gran and grandpa World War 2 was a huge landmark on their lives.

"They were happily married for 70 years."

She and her husband moved in with Irene in Inveraray before George sadly passed away nine years ago, aged 91.

Charity worker Fraser, who lives in Glasgow, said: "One of the advantages of my grandmother being living in Port Glasgow means than I can be here in half an hour and visit her at weekends."

He said that his grandmother is in good health, adding: "She has never smoked and was never much of a drinker.

"I think she knows how lucky she is.

"She has hearing issues and her sight is failing a bit but she still has all her marbles.

"She has always been indepedent and very sharp and she'll give you an opinion on politics or what is happening in the paper.

"Anyone who is alive at 100 is doing well."
