AN inspirational Greenock woman who devoted 20 years of her life to volunteering at Ardgowan Hospice has retired.

Anne Skedd says she got 'incredible satisfaction' from her her time helping others at the reception at the inpatient unit.

She hopes that by sharing her experiences, she will encourage more people to follow in her footsteps and support the vital work done at the facility.

Anne said: "It's been so worthwhile and you meet the most amazing people.

"Sadly it is when they are in terrible distress, but the thing is this is their life at that point and if you can help them just one iota then it's worthwhile.

"People are often scared when they come through the hospice door but I would say, 'you're going to be amazed at what happens here'.

"I can't strees that enough, it's a place full of sunshine and hope.

"I just want the people of Greenock to know what they can get out of volunteering."

Anne said she decided to devote her time to the hospice when she returned to Greenock after spending some time living abroad.

She said: "I was going stir crazy in the house, so my husband suggested going to the hospice."

Anne says she soon realised how valuable being a volunteer could be.

She said: "I went to visit and while I was there, a lady came round with a tea trolley and I thought - that's the job for me.

"I then went for an interview at the hospice and I said I would like to take the tea trolley round but I was told, no you're going to the front desk."

Anne said she never looked back and has relished the years spent in her volunteering role.

She said: "It has been so rewarding. I will cherish my time there."

Lynsey Young, volunteer co-ordinator at Ardgowan, said Anne has been an invaluable asset.

She said: "I only started my job in March this year but right away people said I must make an fuss of Anne finishing after 20 years.

"So I organised a tea party. All I've heard are lovely comments about Anne and how lovely and highly regarded she is."

At the party Anne was presented with a special gold badge to mark her long service.
