MAJOR improvements to Birkmyre Park in Kilmacolm have been welcomed by a councillor.

The council has agreed to reinstate the nine-hole putting green and all-weather pitch surface at the multi-use games area as part of an overall programme to improve pitches in the area.

Councillor Wilson says replacing the hard surface with a new upgraded material means that people will be able to play tennis there.

He said: "This will encourage young people to take up golf and tennis and progress to the tennis club and golf club, who welcome junior members.

"We have a very good golf club and tennis club in the village and facilities like these are where children can get the enthusiasm for both sports.

"It's really good for Birkmyre Park - it is a wonderful facility.

"We have lots of different sports there."

The putting green, which was located next to the MUGA, had been broken up during drainage work 18 months ago, as the route of a pipe went through the green.

Councillor Wilson said he and his constituents had campaigned to get it reinstated.

He said: "It was very popular with families and people asked for it to be brought back."

The work will be completed by a mixture of in-house teams and outside contractors.

Councillor Wilson said: "The putting green will be reinstated by professional groundsmen and the MUGA has been put out to tender.

"In terms of Birkmyre Park, the two rugby pitches were drained and are looking much better and we are upgrading the MUGA and putting green and we have soccer goals.

"We put up the goals and parents paid for the nets."

Mr Wilson says work should start soon on the project.
