INVERCLYDE residents are being urged to share their views on plans to provide extra lighting at Greenock’s Battery Park.

The council has secured £150,000 in funding to enhance the lighting in public parks so people feel safer at night.

It comes after safe walking spaces were highlighted as a concern in a recent safety survey, prompting the council to seek improvements.

A survey will now be undertaken in relation to the Eldon Street park, which offers options around when the lights would operate.

A council statement said: “Responding to issues raised within our public space, activity and women’s safety survey, Inverclyde Council has secured funding from the UK Government to provide safer walking spaces in Battery Park after dark by installing energy efficient lighting.

“The lighting will be solar hybrid LED lighting with optional timings to minimise operational hours.

“We would like the Inverclyde community to help shape our decision-making around the lighting timings in the following survey.”

Residents are asked what they think would be the 'most appropriate timings' to make people feel safer and encourage exercise and activity during dark evenings and early mornings.

The options include dusk (sunset) to 10pm and 5.30am to dawn (sunrise), dusk to 12am (midnight) and 5.30am to dawn, and finally dusk to dawn.

The programme of works was one of a total of 23 projects approved at the environment and regeneration committee in April.

The cash has been provided as part of the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, which is considered a key component of its Levelling Up agenda.
