PARKLIFE has been improved at a popular greenspace in Kilmacolm as part of a near-£90,000 investment.

Visitors to the village's Birkmyre Park are now able to benefit from its improved park benches thanks to a council investment.

The benches within the shelter have been sanded, repaired and re-painted to give them a new lease of life.

Greenock Telegraph:

The revamped park benches come after £86,000 was spent by the council on improvements to the park, following input from the public via an outdoor spaces consultation.

Councillor Michael McCormick, the local authority's convener of environment and regeneration, said: “Birkmyre Park is looking fantastic thanks to the council’s investment and these improved benches are a very welcome addition.

“There was a positive response to last year’s public consultation and it’s great to see those aspirations brought to life.

“Birkmyre is a popular local park in Kilmacolm and one of many wonderful outdoor areas we have across Inverclyde.

“I would encourage people to get out there to discover what Inverclyde has to offer.”

The cost to restore all eight benches within the shelter was £3,500 and the work was carried out by a local contractor. The project began in mid-October and has now been completed.

The council carried out an outdoor spaces consultation in November 2022 to find out the community’s priorities.

As a result, the children’s play area at Birkmyre Park was extended and reopened in May this year, wildflower displays have been introduced, there was additional tree planting and extra seating and picnic tables were installed.

The popular park is also a site of the Queen’s Green Canopy, an initiative set up to celebrate the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Around 25 trees were planted by the council to improve the park and were then adopted in March this year as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy, with support from the Lord Lieutenant, Colonel Peter McCarthy.
