ECO campaigners are hoping the spell of wild weather is finally over - so that they can celebrate Inverclyde's biggest-ever beach clean with a huge picnic at Lunderston Bay on Sunday.

Organisers of the Big Clyde Beach Clean have spent the last four weeks bringing the community together - despite incessant downpours - to collect record amounts of rubbish from the coastline.

Now they have their fingers crossed that the sun comes out and the rain stays off in time of their family fun day to wrap up the programme.

They have been facing a race against time, with the beauty spot waterlogged of late thanks to the inclement conditions.

They plan to have a picnic with volunteers, community groups and supporters coming together.

Since it got under way four weeks ago the big beach clean has encouraged people to join in with litter picks, with the team at Port Glasgow Library and staff from McGill's among those getting involved.

In total 300 volunteers have played their part, picking up 341 bags of rubbish weighing in at 1705kg.

Organiser Annette Thain, of the Green Tangerine social enterprise, said: "We just hope the rain stops and Lunderston Bay dries up in time.

"It has been so wet underfoot and empty.

"We have some massive plans for the picnic, with lots of community groups involved.

"The Big Clyde Beach Clean has been a great success, so many people have been involved and we have managed to get new volunteers too.

"It has been a fantastic four weeks.

"Now we hope the weather will stay dry and we can go ahead with our plans."

Weather-permitting, Sunday's event will run from 11am to 2pm at Lunderston Bay.

As well as the picnic there will be a silent disco litter pick and free ice cream.

Greenock singer songwriter Shelagh McKay will entertain on the day with a nature song.

There will also be a campfire on the beach, with marshmallow toasting, nature walks with Clyde Muirshiel rangers and a RIG Arts seaside workshop on their art bus.

Divers from British marine rescue will be demonstrating their skills and there will be a 'sauna tent' as well as wild swimming.

Inverclyde Shed will also unveil a dolphin sculpture which has been created from rubbish collected during the spring clean.

The picnic has been funded by Inverclyde Community Fund and organised in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The Tele covered the launch last month when volunteers turned up at Parklea in Port Glasgow kick things off.

Port Library staff also joined in and brought the community together for a litter pick.

Organisers of the picnic say they have contingency plans in place in case the weather causes problems at the weekend.
