A CHURCH has dedicated its new community hall in memory of a much-loved youth leader.

Sheena Morgan was involved with the 1st Port Glasgow Company of the Girls' Brigade for 50 years and was also a cherished member of the congregation at Port New Parish Church.

Sheena left a generous legacy to the church and in turn it was able to create a brand-new community space that will now be used by future generations.

Two of her close friends, Wendy Tait, present captain of the company, and Sheena MacFarlane OBE, a former company captain, were on hand to unveil the plaque in her honour and cut the ribbon.

Together the 'two Sheenas' ran the 1st Port Glasgow GB, which they were part of for half a century.

Paying tribute to her late friend, Sheena said: "She dedicated her life to God, her church family, parish and especially the girls of the 1st Port Glasgow Girls‘ Brigade.

"Sheena had also been the leader of the Beginners’ Sunday School for many years and a church elder.

"Throughout her life she had such a huge impact on many young people, members of the church family and the whole community within Port Glasgow."

Sheena passed away two years ago, aged 76, with her best friend by her side.

As well as serving her community through the church, the former bank worker used her creative talents to support dozens of charities, including Ardgowan Hospice.

Sheena, a former head of Kilmacolm Primary, said: "Sheena was such a lovely person and a great friend.

"Her greatest love was the 1st Port Glasgow Girls' Brigade. She was part of it for so long - I think I first met her in 1966 and she barely missed a Thursday night in all that time.

"We loved the fun and the fellowship and helping young people."

Following the death of her parents Sandy and Janey, Sheena had no close living relatives but was cherished by her many friends and godchildren.

Sheena was born in 1945 and brought up in Fyfe Park Terrace, where she lived her entire life until she went into hospital last September.

She attended Clune Park Primary and Greenock Academy and worked in the town's Clydesdale Bank, later moving to Renfrewshire branches and then the mortgage centre in Glasgow.

Her friend said she will be remembered as someone who was 'always smiling, hard-working and dedicated', but who didn't like a fuss.

Minister Reverend William Boyle conducted a short act of dedication and paid tribute to a fondly-remembered pillar of the community.

He said: "Sheena Morgan was a well loved and valued member of our church.

"She had a positive impact on so many people, especially during her time as a Girls' Brigade leader.

"When we created a Facebook post about the new Sheena Morgan Hall there were hundreds of tributes from across the community to a remarkable lady.

"As our church continues to grow, I am delighted that we can add this new space to meet demand in memory of someone who faithfully served God and the people of our parish."
