YOUNG Gourock entrepreneurs have reached the national final of a top competition.

Sixth year pupils from St Columba’s High School won four awards at Young Enterprise Scotland’s Company Programme for Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde.

An expert panel of judges were impressed with the team’s excellent invention, the ‘AdapTABLE’ – bespoke tables that can be assembled without the use of glue, nails or tools.

The youngsters, who have set up their own company called ‘Making Design Fun’ or MDF, will now go through to the national finals.

Tegwen O’Rourke, one of the team members, said they were delighted to win.

She said: “There are 10 of us on the team who are all in sixth year.

“Our product is a table which you can build from three pieces without screws or glue. The tables can also be personalised.”

Claire Thomson, a chemistry teacher at the school, said
everyone is proud of their achievement.

She said: “The young enterprise team have done really well.”
The team, led by pupil Mhairi McCann, won awards for the best business report and interview, business presentation, best company and best company overall.

Eighteen teams – including four from Inverclyde – reached the regional finals having been running businesses since the start of the academic year with support from local business volunteers and Young Enterprise Scotland.

Two teams from Inverclyde Academy and one from Clydeview Academy also picked up prizes.
