THOUGHTFUL school pupils in Gourock are raising money to help impoverished children in the third world.

Hard-working youngsters at Gourock Primary opened their own cafe to raise cash for the cause.

Their excellent efforts raised £160, which will be donated to their partner school Namadidi Primary in Malawi.

Ms Rachel Foster, who is the P7/6 teacher, says the cafe is organised by children in P5 to P7 who are in the school’s ‘GIRFEC’, or ‘Getting It Right For Every Child’ group.

The GIRFEC plan is a national strategy in Scotland to improve outcomes and support children and young people by offering the right help at the right time from the right people.

Ms Foster said: “The cafe is great for the children as they run the whole thing, so it’s great experience for them.

“They love it.”

The children enjoyed serving up hot drinks and tasty snacks to members from Ardgowan Square Church who were visiting the school.

The guests also played a board game devised by the pupils, which explained the purpose of the cafe and where the funds raised from it will be distributed.

Ms Foster added: “The idea is that it teaches people about GIRFEC and it’s different indicators, which are about keeping children safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, responsible, respected and included.”
