GOUROCK gardening gurus proved they had flower power in what was another record-breaking Spring Flower Show.

Dazzling daffodils, eye-catching hyacinths and amazing amaryllis entries were some of the pretty plants which lit up the Gamble Halls as people of all ages uprooted their best exhibits and put them to the test.

The prestigious show, organised by the Gourock Horticultural Society, attracted hundreds of spectators with about 1,200 entries — up nine per cent on last year.

George Irvine, the Telegraph’s own gardening expert — who is also president of the Gourock Horticultural Society —was bowled over at the number of impressive entries on display, especially from local nurseries, schools and youth groups.

He said: “We had a record-breaking number of entries this year, which was absolutely fantastic.

“We had well over 700 entries from children and the level of innovation on display was remarkable.” As well as growing their own plants, the children also showed off their art work.

George added: “Binnie Street Nursery made puppets out of old socks while pupils from Gourock Primary School made an exceptional bulb display with daffodils and hyacinths, it really was superb.

“Whinhill Primary were also very innovative with their entries, including Lauren McLellan who won the Anne Anderson Children’s award for her craft work.” George also praised competition newcomers Kelly Street Nursery, who were awarded the highest points in the pre-school section, and talented kids from The Garvel Deaf Centre who entered the show for the first time.

Meanwhile, in the adult classes, it was George himself who triumphed as he won The Eric Gallagher Memorial trophy, as well as the best bulb exhibition and he was also the highest scoring adult.

He said: “It felt quite amazing to win the Eric Gallagher trophy as I’m the first person to win it.

“Eric was an old friend of mine so it was really special to win that.” Another big winner on the day was Maureen Watt, who won the best exhibit in the adult craft competition for her cross stitch.

George added: “Her cross stitch was of a dog and it was a work of art.” Gourock Horticultural Society would like to thank everyone who supported the event with special thanks to Councillor Terry Loughran who opened the show.
