A WELL-KNOWN Scottish singer songwriter surprised pupils at a Greenock primary school when he popped in to deliver an expert music lesson.
Kevin McDermott, of The Kevin McDermott Orchestra, was a special guest at All Saints as he performed to pupils and staff as part of the Absent Voices project exploring the history of Greenock’s famous Sugar Sheds.
It was the finale to five weeks of workshops at All Saints, where youngsters have been learning about the sheds through art and music.
Local artist Anne McKay, who is one of the key figures behind Absent Voices, said: “It was a terrific day where pupils received certificates for the achievements and hard work.
“Also lots of sweeties were munched — but only because lessons were about the sugar industry.
“Pupils were also allowed to add another panel, showing the Greenock Sugar Sheds, to their glass mural which they worked on with RIG Arts. Kevin McDermott gave pupils a wee concert and had the pupils singing and clapping their hands.
“They all sang one of his songs, ‘Voices’, which Absent Voices have adopted as their theme tune.”
