DARING staff at a Greenock opticians have set their sights on conquering Britain’s highest peak to help people suffering from Motor Neurone Disease.

Ladies at Greenock’s Specsavers store are firmly focused on scaling the 1,300ft up to the summit of Ben Nevis to raise cash for charity MND Scotland.

They are among 10 members of staff from the Oak Mall outlet who will reach new heights in May as part of their annual fundraising drive.

The team join forces each year to help a charity close to their hearts and MND Scotland was chosen for 2014. The Specsavers team are well prepared for the near four-hour trek, having successfully climbed Ben Lomond in 2012. Now they are taking a step-up and preparing for their biggest charity challenge to date.

Sophie McKechnie, who is leading the Greenock team, said: “The mountain climb is a huge challenge for us and we have all been training in preparation for the big day.

“MND Scotland is such a worthwhile charity, as its vital work makes a huge difference to people living with such a devastating disease. We hope that the generous people of Greenock will help us raise as much money as possible to help MND Scotland.” The charity organisation which will benefit from the climb works with people living with a neurological disorder that affects the cells controlling voluntary muscle activity, like speaking, walking, swallowing, and general movement of the body.

MND Scotland is the only charity in the country dedicated to people with motor neurone disease, their families, friends and carers.

Fundraising is already well underway at the Specsavers shop, with staff taking part in dress down Fridays, while collection tins have been placed throughout the store for people to donate.

An online JustGiving page has also been set up for anyone who wants to sponsor the team.
